After losing 3-0 to England in their first European Championship training match, the Red Flames wanted to show their potential in front of their fans. However, they had a tough time in the opening stage with fierce duels for Northern Ireland.
The Belgians only surfaced in the middle of the first half. After two warnings, Tessa Wullaert was able to unlock the score after a good play.
The Belgians are no longer giving up the initiative. The biggest surprise was when a tie fell from the sky in the first half. Wade took a ball on the shoe immediately and left Nikki Evard without a chance: 1-1.
The Red Flames started the second half with a knife between their teeth, but Northern Ireland refused to turn over.
Substitute Elena Daunt and De Kenny Wallart boosted the Belgian’s chances, but the 2-1 score did not go down. When Wallart appeared to be on his way to the second goal, goalkeeper Burns pulled the emergency brake: red!
Northern Ireland of ten men managed to stop the Belgian tidal wave until the 80th minute, but then the dam broke. Van Kerkhoven saved the red flame with a head kick.
Tessa Wallart, with a superb shot and her 67th goal for the Flames, and Van Kerkhoven, with a bit of luck, scored a resounding victory. With the training matches against Austria (Sunday, 26 June) and Luxembourg (Tuesday, 28 June), the Red Torch team should get a taste of the European Championship.
