“I’ll stay anyway, because the team is going.”
Remco Evenepoel’s words couldn’t be clearer. The Belgian champion will remain the spearhead of the Soudal-Quick Step team for at least another year.
“I’m very happy here. It was just some tough moments, but we’ll keep it going next year.”
“We will try to build and perform in the races when we have to. I have no reason to be unhappy here. We will get the most out of it.”
As the team’s largest offering, Evenpoel was a bit more in the eye of the merger storm. However, he remained calm about it.
“There were conversations, but I always changed the switch quickly and focused on my training,” he says.
This training was enough to have him in good shape – and without worry about his future – for the start in Lombardy. “My legs felt really good. I had a really good day. But the fall decided a lot…”
“My knees, hips and back were damaged. Everything was really open. At the end of the race it started to weigh on me,” he says. “Although I should feel satisfied, I did my best and took steps forward.”
“In the future I will come back here to win.” And that in the Soudal-Quick Step shirt.
