Ajax headed to Waalwijk with great pressure in the seventh round of the Eredivisie. Only a win over mid-table can avoid the Amsterdam crisis.
And that mission seems to be going well too, with Ajax taking the lead three times in North Brabant. But with the score at 2-3, the match was rocked ten minutes from time by an incident involving RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaesne.
During one of the matches, the goalkeeper collided with Ajax striker Brian Probbe, who inadvertently hit Weissen on the left temple. Then the goalkeeper immediately fainted.
A huge panic soon arose over the condition of Weissen, who immediately received medical assistance at the stadium. RKC players protected the goalkeeper and emergency services.
Weissen was immediately resuscitated. He was then carried off the field and taken to hospital. RKC technical director Frank van Mosselveld informed NOS that Weissen recovered while being carried off the field.
He added: “But he did not know where he was. Etienne was unconscious for a while. Doctors immediately began resuscitation, but it did not appear to be a heart problem.”
The reaction from the RKC players was very upset, including compatriot Dario van den Buijs, who left the field in tears. After consultation, it was decided not to continue playing.
