Royal Garden Party and more activities for the British Royal Family

King Charles hosted the Royal Garden Party in the gardens of Buckingham Palace for the first time this week. In this way, the British monarch maintains a centuries-old tradition. But that wasn’t the only thing on the agenda for the British royals.

King Charles and Queen Camilla opened the doors of Buckingham Palace for the first time since the coronation in 2023. Royal Garden Party. Or yes, the gates to the mansion’s backyard. Since 1860, these garden parties have been held as a way for the King to recognize members of the community for their public service.

A centuries-old tradition

In the spring and summer months, the King traditionally hosts three parties in the gardens of Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland, although more are possible. Each year, more than 30,000 guests are invited to spend an afternoon in the picturesque gardens of the royal residences. The dress code is – as you might expect – very elegant. Men are expected to wear a morning suit, and ladies wear long dresses with a head covering such as a hat or hair tie.

Royal guests

This was the first time King Charles had hosted. Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester also attended the event. Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were absent, although they made an appearance during the final garden party of 2023.

Prince William may not have been at the Buckingham Palace garden party, but the prince certainly didn’t sit still. A day after the garden party, the prince sweated it out on the beach during a beach volleyball match in Cornwall. The Prince of Wales sent the ball over the net several times, and according to the journalists present, the opponents were unable to return the ball.

Queen Camilla receives special guests

Queen Camilla also did not sit idly by, as one day after the garden party at the palace, she received two special guests. It was about a horse and a donkey that were fed by none other than the queen. Camilla made a lot of jokes while visiting the animals. For example, she joked that the animals were “almost as big as her” when she posed among them for a photo.

King Charles is happy to be out of his “cage”.

During a working visit the day after the garden party, King Charles joked that he was happy to be “out of the cage”. The 75-year-old king has been making working visits again since last week after resigning from his public duties in February. The king was diagnosed with cancer. The king’s visit was not known until a few days ago. Charles apologized for that. He said, according to British media: “I’m sorry I surprised you. When I had this opportunity and was allowed out of my cage, I wanted to come and have a look.”
