Russia warned, on Saturday, of stray mines that the Ukrainian army was going to place in the Black Sea after the start of the Russian offensive on Ukraine. Moscow does not rule out the possibility of mines drifting into the Bosphorus or even the Mediterranean.

“After the start of the Russian special military operation, the Ukrainian naval forces set up mine barriers in the ports of Odessa, Ochakiv, Chornomorsk and Yuzhny,” the FSB said in a statement. The agency said the mines were “obsolete,” including those made in the “first half of the 20th century.”

In inclement weather, the cables holding the mines began to break, the FSB said. “Winds and currents drive the mines in the western Black Sea.” Since the flow in this area is carried out mainly to the south, according to the FSB, “it is not excluded that the mines will drift into the Bosporus and then into the Mediterranean basin.”

Security services said the Russian Black Sea Fleet issued a warning on Friday.
