The Ukrainian military lost any contact with 13 soldiers on Zmenyi (Snake Island), a small island near the Romanian border, after Russian naval and air strikes on Thursday. All border guards were killed in those attacks. But before their death, they sent an unmistakable message to their Russian opponents.
An audio file – not independently verified – shows a Russian warship telling Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their weapons and surrender “to avoid bloodshed or you will be bombed,” according to Ukrainian authorities. The Ukrainian answer was short but sweet: “Russian warship, we kissed ******”. According to Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Minister, the Russian ship began to be bombed.
