Some videos and photos have surfaced on social media in recent days showing Ukrainian soldiers allegedly beheaded near the town of Bashmoyet. Thus, the Russian mercenary group Wagner is once again accused of war crimes.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US nonprofit research group, on Monday took part in an investigation into which Wagner forces reportedly continue to commit war crimes by “beheading Ukrainian soldiers at Bashmut”.

“Russian social media users posted pictures showing the remains of a Ukrainian soldier’s head on a stick in an undisclosed area in Pashmut,” it added. A photo of it was shared on the social networking site VKontakte with the words: “Bashmoyt. The remains of a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The ISW continues: “Social media users recalled similar cases of skulls on skewers in Popasna (near Lugansk, ed.)where Wagner’s forces operated in the spring and summer of 2022. They add that the Geneva Conventions, which govern the laws of war, prohibit mutilation and looting of corpses in war.

while laughing

In recent days, some photos and videos have appeared on social media that allegedly show such dismembered Ukrainians.

A first video, posted on April 8 on a pro-Russian channel, was allegedly filmed by Wagner members. The video shows the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers next to a destroyed military vehicle. The dead bodies appear decapitated. “(The armored car) phlegm” could be heard. Then, pointing to the corpses, one of them laughs and says: They killed them. Someone came to them. They came to them and cut off their heads.” The soldiers’ hands also appear to have been cut off.

The video is said to have been filmed near the eastern Ukrainian city of Pashmut, where fighting between Russians and Ukrainians has been taking place for months.

still alive

A second video shows a Russian soldier beheading a Ukrainian soldier with a knife. The video was largely blurred and shared on social media. Based on the surroundings, the video may have actually been filmed in the summer. At the beginning of the video, it is said that the victim is still alive at the time of the events.

The location of the two videos could not be independently verified.
