The damning report from the House Ethics Committee was released Thursday, but according to Santos, that’s not the reason he’ll step down after next year’s election. He says in the news service
The report says there is “substantial evidence” that Santos violated the law. He has been accused of using campaign money for personal purposes, defrauding donors and embezzling his funds. The results of the months-long investigation will be handed over to the judiciary.
Santos strongly disagrees with the statement. “This is a despicable political allegation that shows how low our federal government has sunk. Anyone who participated in this gross miscarriage of justice should be ashamed. He has said he will continue to defend himself against the allegations.
The crimes mentioned in the report are not the only problems for Santos. He faces dozens of charges, including campaign finance and money laundering. He had to post $500,000 bail in May after his arrest. He survived a motion to impeach him earlier this month, but according to US media there may be a new motion after the conclusion of the Ethics Committee report.
