In the eastern Attica region, the city of Varnavas was on fire, also covering part of the capital Athens with smoke. Residents of Varnavas were ordered to evacuate via text message. Several people who suffered from smoke inhalation were taken to hospital. It says the tourist areas are not currently threatened by fires. Firefighters are on hand to fight the blaze.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of the town of Marathon, north of the capital Athens, tonight.
Earlier today, another fire broke out in Megara, western Attica. Residents there were also warned to evacuate.
Near Thessaloniki, in the north-east of the country, a vegetation fire in Lagadas has been partially controlled.
Kostas Lagouvardos, research director at the Athens Observatory, told ERTNews TV that action must be taken quickly against the fire. Otherwise, the fires could quickly become out of control due to weather conditions.
Greece is highly prone to wildfires during the summer months, especially after an exceptionally dry winter. June and July were the hottest months since measurements began in 1960.
