Qualcomm’s latest smartphone chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is faster than Apple’s A17 Pro in some benchmarks. This is remarkable, because iPhones have performed better than Android devices for years.

“Apple will face serious competition from Snapdragon 8 Gen 3”
At the end of October, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. It is the company’s new high-end chip, which we will find in many premium smartphones over the next 12 months. In recent years, Qualcomm’s top chips have always performed less well than Apple’s newer processors. So iPhones were faster than Android devices.
That seems to be changing this time. At least a little. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 benchmarks have emerged, showing that it delivers sometimes better performance than the Apple A17 Pro. We find that in iPhone 15 Pro And iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Antutu is a popular application for testing smartphone performance. The A17 Pro phone achieved a total of 1,487,203 points, while the new Snapdragon phone achieved no less than 2,139,281 points. This is approximately 50 percent faster.
Another popular benchmark app, Geekbench 6, shows a mixed picture. The A17 Pro’s single base score of 2,926 is clearly higher than the 2,329 for the Qualcomm chip. The multi-core test, which shows how well you can multitask with a smartphone, falls the other way. Apple achieved 7,237 points, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor scored 7,501 points.
Each criterion places a different emphasis during testing. This sometimes leads to conflicting results. But it’s clear that Apple and Qualcomm are at least on equal footing this year.
The first smartphones equipped with the new Snapdragon
The first smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor have already been announced. This concerns the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. It is currently only available in China, but will likely arrive in Europe later. The OnePlus 12 is also likely to run on this chip, just like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. We expect to see these devices in the first months of 2024.
