Bas Dost saved Utrecht from defeat at the start of the season. The 33-year-old striker, who returned to the Eredivisie after ten years abroad, started off the bench for the first leg against RKC Waalwijk. Coach Henk Fraser brought Dost onto the field right after the break when trailing 2-0 and thanks to two goals from the substitute, Utrecht earned another point: 2-2.
The Utrecht club has been very active this summer. The club not only appointed a new coach with Fraser, but also brought in a lot of new players. Fraser has initiated six acquisitions in Walwick. FC Utrecht got off to a good start, but ran into a 2-0 deficit midway.
Dario van den Puijs opened the scoring after fifteen minutes after Michael Kramer headed home from a corner kick. Shortly before the end of the first half, Elias Belhassani scored the goal 2-0 beautifully. The midfielder was given space to attack and shoot from inside the post.
Dost needed 7 minutes after the break as a substitute to score his first goal for Utrecht. A little earlier, Kramer, on the other hand, missed a great opportunity to make the score 3-0. In the 2-1 match, RKC defender Sean Odewey missed a free chance. It turned out that these were expensive mistakes, because in the final stage, Dost scored the equalizer.
