A funeral home in Indiana pleaded guilty to 40 felony counts. The bodies of at least 31 people were found at his funeral home, in various states of decomposition. This was reported by the American media.
Randy Lankford, 50, has been charged with failing to complete the funeral services he was paid to do. The judge aims to sentence him to twelve years in prison, eight of which will be house arrest. The judge’s man also has to pay back nearly 43,000 euros to 53 families. Lankford will formally hear his sentencing on June 23.
Police in Jeffersonville, population 50,000, tracked down the man in July of last year after reports of a strong odor emanating from the funeral home. Dozens of unrefrigerated corpses were found in the building. Some have been in the building for months. At least one body had been there since March of that year.
The cremated remains of seventeen other people were found. According to court documents, police did not tell some families until months later that they had not received the actual ashes of their relatives or that their loved ones had never been cremated. It is not known why the man failed to fulfill his obligations.
