The day after his World Cup cross in Val di Sole, Laurens Sweeck left for training camp with Crelan-Fristads. “But after one day he caught a bad cold,” his father, Stefan Swick, told Sporza.
“Because of this illness, he took it a little easier. He also trained a lot in the run-up, with 2 heavy training blocks in 5 weeks.”
In Loenhout, Baal and Herentals the slightly ill Sweck was absent. “The batteries are a bit dead. But Laurens will be back in Koksigde tomorrow.”
So no (good) Sweck during a busy year-end period, but he’s hoping he can capitalize on that later in the championship. Maybe in the next few days, now that sand junctions are coming.
“But the sand will be much less important, because everything is very wet and they expect heavy rain,” says Father Swick.
“We probably won’t be able to speak of a real sandy cross in Cukside. Anyone in good shape will be able to follow it.”
So what can we expect from Sweek? “The doctor is definitely expecting an improvement, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be on top just yet. He still has a few crosses for BC.”
“Sunday he’ll also race the World Cup Cross in Zonnhoven, where he wants to hang on well to defend his captain’s World Cup jersey. After that, all arrows are aimed at BC.”
