China on Wednesday protested US official contacts with the Taiwanese government. Beijing considers the island part of the People’s Republic of China.

According to CNA’s report, the discreet conversations took place at the Washington office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). AIT is the unofficial representation of the United States in Taipei. Taiwan’s foreign minister declined to comment on the meeting. The question of whether this is the first visit of the Secretary of State to the US capital is also not answered. The meeting shows that the US government is less reserved in its dealings with Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin accused the Taipei government of seeking US support for independence. The spokesman said the US should not interfere in the Taiwan issue and should not escalate tensions.

US President Donald Trump in 2018 eased restrictions on travel and contacts with Taiwan for US government officials. President Joe Biden accepted those concessions.
