Telenet acquires a 20% stake in Flemish radio station Nostalgie. The telecom company announced this after the close of trading on Thursday evening. Telenet buys 20 percent of the shares of the media group Mediahuis in Flanders One, the company that operates the radio station Nostalgie in Flanders. Financial details have not been disclosed.
After the sale, Mediahuis will remain the majority shareholder with 55 percent of the shares. Then Nostalgie SAS, which is part of the NRJ group, indirectly owns 25 percent of the shares.
These are not Telenet’s first steps into the radio scene. Via Play Media nv, formerly SBS Belgium, the company already operates Flemish Network Radio Network NRJ, along with Mediahuis. “With the entry of Flanders One into the capital of Flanders One / Flemish Radio Nostalgie, Telenet sees an increase in its position in the Flemish radio market. For Flemish Nostalgie, the planned entry of Telenet as a shareholder means that cooperation with Play activities can be strengthened,” reads a press release. Thursday evening.
Mediahuis sees this entry as “additional opportunities in the area of cross-promotion, as a result of which the Nostalgie brand will gain greater recognition among Flemish radio listeners and be able to grow sustainably,” the group says in a separate press release.
future nrj?
A Telenet spokesperson couldn’t say what this means for NRJ’s future. “It’s too early for that,” he said. He noted that the nostalgia deal still needs approval from the competition authority and the Flemish government. The result of the new collaboration should be “audible and visual” from the fall.
Nostalgie reaches around 363,000 listeners in Flanders every day and thus achieves a market share of 6.2 percent. On January 1, 2023, Nostalgie’s new FM license came into effect, allowing it to continue operating radio on the FM band for the next five years.
