Rasmus Teller won the Dwars door het Hageland for the second time in his career. In Diest Castle, the Norwegian from Uno X, who is also the best on this slope in 2021, was too strong for Stan Van Trecht and Florian Vermeersch. Mathieu van der Poel was in the decisive lead group, but suffered a puncture twenty kilometers from the finish.

Throughout Haagland, this year has been dominated by the return of Mathieu van der Poel, who has not played since his victory in Paris-Roubaix. MVDP He was also immediately the frontrunner on his return. A 181-kilometre course, of which 41 kilometers are not paved or gravel, had bacon in the mouth. Can he repeat his 2017 win?

In the first part of the game there were many attacks. There were also some leading groups, but mainly because of the Alpecin-Deceuninck forces, no one really got the space. With eighty kilometers to go, when Meindert Weulink (ABLOC CT), Jasper Haest (VolkerWessels) and James Fouché (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) were caught out after an attack, everything came back together. The final match can begin.

Early attack van der Poel
Mathieu van der Pol thought the same way. Having pressed hard, his team continued the attack with 75 kilometers to go – on a gravel strip. The Alpecin-Deceunicnk leader immediately made a puncture, but nearly collapsed in a corner, after which his chain snagged. However, he still had a head start and so he decided to move on. Once off the tape, he was about fifteen seconds ahead of the chasing group of about 35 riders.

Van der Poel continued driving for a while, but decided to back off after ten kilometers. He returned to the pursuers. It was a little turbulent there, until Uno-X decided to check. They obviously don’t want the stragglers back, but they also have plans to attack: Soren Wernskjold went to fight with Frederick Frisson. The duo got ahead of the crowd for a while, but the pace was just too fast to really get away from them.

Lambert pulls, Van der Poel has a hole
Casper Pedersen (Soudal Quick-Step) has been given some space as a single. What is called, he can run for about a minute. However, with 35 kilometers to go, the Dane’s disaster struck: cramping. He could barely turn the pedals and saw his bullet disappear like snow in the sun. We got a whole platoon again. At the start of the last lap, at the Château d’Este, Yves Lambert put in a solid effort and that led to a new lead group.

In addition to Lampert himself, the retrievers were Kasper Pedersen, Stan Van Trecht (Soudal Quick-Step), Søren Wærenskjold, Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X), Loïc Vliegen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) And Florian Vermeersch (Lotto Dstny) and Mathieu van der Poel are present. However, the latter had a puncture with twenty kilometers to go. He got a new rear wheel drive neutral, but had to watch the chasing group pass him. It seemed an impossible task to return to the front.

Van der Poel is still trying to come back
Van der Poel joined the second group with 11 kilometers to go, which was 24 seconds behind the leading group at the time. Alpecin-Deceuninck led the peloton of about twenty riders. In the final segment, van der Poel seemed to be on his own, but Timo Kelech managed to come back after doing a lot of work. He did everything he could to get Van der Poel back on top.

Meanwhile, the lead group collapsed. Stan Van Trecht attacked on a small climb and only Vermeersch and Teller could follow. However, the collaboration did not go well with the trio. Clarke, Vliegen and Lambert almost connected again in the last kilometre. Van der Poel had just before this attempted to cross, but was unable to do so.

Tyler is the strongest
She was to go between Teller, Van Trecht and Vermeersch at the castle of d’Este, because the three pursuers failed to return. In the uphill sprint, Teller was shown to have the best legs. Duaris Pap Haagland won for the second time, after he was also the best in the gravel race in 2021. Van Trecht came second, and Florian Vermeersch third.
