It is not only with us that the weather is exceptionally warm. Temperatures in France are likely to reach over thirty degrees in the coming days. And this has a lot to do with the “heat column”. But in early November it will be cooler again.

France weather maps will turn red in the coming days. The thermometer will indicate more than thirty degrees and we may feel that too.

“Right now it is warmer than normal across the European continent. Especially in France, but also in the Benelux, we will have a 3 to 5 degree deviation from the normal temperature,” says Nicholas Rose, of the Benelux weather emergency. It’s usually about 15 degrees this time of year. Next weekend we expect 20 to 22 degrees for the Benelux. In southwest France they’ll be able to measure over thirty degrees in the coming days. In the far lower left corner of the country they’ll get a deflection 7 degrees.

These high temperatures can largely be explained by the area of high pressure above the Alps. Warm air is trapped there, but the low pressure area over the Atlantic is pumping that warm air north through Spain and France, but eventually to us as well.

This phenomenon is often explained by the word “heat column”. But, says Rose, the only meteorological term is “Spanish column.” We actually saw this last summer when a very warm air bubble reached the Benelux via a southern airflow across France and suddenly we were exposed to tropical temperatures. After a few days, the situation returned to normal again. “We’re seeing it now. At the beginning of November, it will be much colder again,” says Rose.

In fact, this situation is quite atypical, but not entirely exceptional. It’s still warm in October. It is interesting that we will measure 23 degrees next Sunday before the end of October. But it could have happened this past year or ten years ago, for example. All parameters for such weather are green, and therefore it is a perfect combination to get these temperatures.”
