Leonardo DiCaprio called on young Brazilians to vote in the October presidential election via Twitter. It is known that the American star actor does not get along well with the current president of Brazil. Far-right Jair Bolsonaro responded sarcastically to DiCaprio’s vote on Twitter. “Thank you for your support, Leo! It is very important that every Brazilian vote in the upcoming elections.”
The Hollywood star posted on Twitter Thursday, reminding that Brazil is “the cradle of the Amazon rainforest and other ecosystems essential to climate change.” “What happens there is important to all of us and the voice of youth is essential to effecting change for a healthy planet,” DiCaprio sent, along with a link to brazilian site information on voter registration.
Nearly 2,000 football fields
The actor has repeatedly turned on the Brazilian president since taking office in 2019. After Bolsonaro took office, the average annual rate of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest rose more than 75 percent compared to the previous decade.
To illustrate, between August 2020 and July 2021, the Amazon region was deforested with a total area of 13,235 square kilometers. That is, approximately 2,000 football fields. Under Bolsonaro’s rule, the environmental agencies that control activities in the Amazon rainforest have been cut. Thus, the Brazilian government is accused of working with impunity against gold prospectors and illegal timber traders who threaten the survival of the forest.
“Thank you for your support, Leo!”
DiCaprio believes the South American country needs another president to save the Amazon rainforest. Hence his call for Brazilian youth to vote for sure in October.
Bolsonaro himself made his plea. On Friday, the Brazilian president mocked the Hollywood star on Twitter: “Thank you for your support, Leo! It is very important that every Brazilian vote in the upcoming elections. Our people will decide whether they want to preserve our sovereignty over the Amazon or rather be ruled by thieves who serve foreign interests.”
The Brazilian president ends with the joke: “Well done in The Revenant.” Refers to the 2015 western film for which DiCaprio won several prestigious film awards.
