The age of HPV vaccination is reduced from 13 to 10 years and boys can also be vaccinated

In addition to girls, boys can now be vaccinated against HPV. Because the vaccine works best before someone comes into contact with the virus, the vaccination age will be lowered from 13 to 10 years.

Soon, the first young people in the IJsselland region will receive an invitation from the RIVM for vaccination. GGD IJsselland will start giving vaccinations at the beginning of March.

HPV is a virus. Human papillomavirus. You usually don’t notice the virus, but it is highly contagious. HPV infection can cause cervical and penile cancer, for example. Eight out of ten people will be infected with HPV once or more in their lifetime. Fortunately, your body usually clears the virus on its own. In some people this does not happen, then cancer can develop after 10 to 15 years. In the Netherlands, an average of 1,100 women and 400 men are diagnosed with HPV each year.

HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine protects against six types of HPV cancer. Boys and girls receive an invitation to be vaccinated against HPV the year they turn 10. Additionally, in 2022 and 2023, all twelve to eighteen-year-old boys and girls who have not been vaccinated against HPV will receive an invitation to vaccinate. Boys and girls up to 14 years of age receive two vaccines. Six months after the first vaccination, they receive an invitation for the second vaccination. Young people from the age of 15 need three injections for good protection.

GGD IJsselland administers HPV vaccines at a nearby health clinic. Bring the appointment:

• RIVM’s calling card
• Completed consent form
• ID card, passport or driver’s license if you are 14 or older

Vaccination against human papillomavirus and vaccination against corona

Do you have a call for HPV vaccination and have you also been vaccinated against corona? Then it is important that there is at least 14 days between the corona vaccination and the HPV vaccination.
