The airline industry wants to lift ‘unnecessary and ineffective’ travel restrictions | abroad

Airports and airlines are calling on European countries to lift travel restrictions imposed due to the rise of the omikron variable. Countries must follow guidance from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which said on Wednesday that travel restrictions are no longer helpful in spreading the omikron variant, as it is now spreading primarily within communities.

In a joint press release, ACI Europe and A4E called on countries such as France, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom to lift travel restrictions to countries where the omikron variant is already in circulation.

“ECDC has always been clear that travel restrictions can only limit the introduction of new variants and that they will be of no use once the alternative is spread across Europe,” Olivier Jankovic of ACI Europe and Thomas Rennert of A4E said in the letter.

“Coordination and Consistency”

The statement also says that travel restrictions such as quarantine or the duty to test for vaccinated people are a thorn in the side of the travel industry, while governments will do better to limit infection within local communities.

Finally, according to the companies, the restrictions have caused the European Corona certificate to lose its value. The two organizations concluded that “effective coordination and coherence must be strengthened not only within the European Union, but also at the pan-European level.”
