The Belgian, who died on Wednesday in an industrial accident during the installation of a new bridge in Lochem, Netherlands, had worked for construction company Aertssen Group in Stabroek. The company is in mourning. “Our condolences to the family,” says Quinn Vromans of the Artsin Group.
Aertssen Group, which specializes in working with large cranes, among others, was one of the companies operating at the work yard in Lochem. The tragedy occurred during the construction of a bridge over the Twente Canal. Contractor BAM is assembling the new bridge on the pier adjacent to the canal. The larger parts were lifted into the air on Wednesday and had to be attached to each other. The two dead men were standing next to the arch raised on a building tower about 50 meters high. Suddenly the bow fell. A Belgian and a Pole were killed.
The industrial accident is currently being investigated. In the Aertssen group their reaction was very shocking. “We are deeply shocked by the tragic accident in Lochem in which one of our company's employees was one of the unfortunate fatalities,” says Koen Vromans, Director of Marketing and Communications. “Our condolences to the family and friends of the victims. We are fully cooperating with the investigation. In order to keep this matter quiet, we will refrain from further comment.”
There were two other victims, both Belgians, but they were out of danger.
