Last week, Tottenham drew bottom side Southampton. Not a good result, but Antonio Conte’s post-match press conference defied all imagination. He did not protect his players, on the contrary. He described them as selfish and criticized the club’s culture and wisdom.
The Italian coach appeared to nearly beg his board for his resignation and a week later the two parties parted effectively “by mutual agreement”.
Tottenham currently sits fourth in the English Premier League, which is the last place that qualifies them for the UEFA Champions League. They are 20 points behind leaders Arsenal and have also been eliminated from all cup competitions.
Conte has been with the London club since the end of 2021. He helped the club to the UEFA Champions League in his first season. This season also started well, but after the World Cup it fell apart. In February, Conte was also out for a while due to surgery. In his absence, Stellini’s assistant has taken over and will now also finish the season.
“We still have 10 matches left and we have to fight for this CL card,” said Chairman Daniel Levy. “Everyone now has to work towards the same goal. We want to finish as high as possible, especially for our loyal fans.”
