The Red Panthers easily qualified for the World Hockey Championship quarter-finals. Chile, making their first ever World Cup finals match, had no match against the Belgians: 5-0. On Tuesday, Belgium will play in the quarter-finals against defending champions Netherlands.
Objectives:
- 5′ Vanden Bury 1-0 (SC)
- 13′ Rasir 2-0
- 14′ Vanden Bure 3-0 (Algeria)
- 19′ Engelbert 4-0
- 30′ Engelbert 5-0
Early goals put the Red Panthers on the table against Chile
Chile, who made their World Cup debut, survived the group stage with enthusiasm and are hoping for a new showdown against the Red Panthers. The first chance was also for Chile, but Maldonado did not finish it and this would break the heart of the Chilean woman.
Because in the first Belgian penalty kick it was hit on the spot: Stephanie Vanden Bure hit the goal 1-0 and that was the signal for the Belgian woman to push the throttle even more.
Rasir finished off the offensive of the book well and at the end of the first quarter Vanden Bury had already achieved her sixth goal in the World Cup: 3-0. Even after that, the Red Panthers continued their march.
Engelbert cemented her status as a top player with a hit at the far post, a great dash and a finish right after the break. Although there was a smell at 5-0, because she would have hit the ball with her hand.
After 5-0, the Red Panthers’ pace waned. Chile weren’t under much pressure anymore and a clever reaction from goalkeeper Aisling D’Hooghe was needed to keep the number 0 on the board. A win and a ticket to the quarter-finals is no longer in danger: the Red Panthers will meet the Netherlands at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
“I think we can defeat anyone.”
- Charlotte Engelbert The Woman of the Match was voted on. “We expected an exciting and difficult match, but our early goals made it easier for us. Against the Netherlands we have nothing to lose, we will be ready.”
- National coach Raoul Ehren He was happy with the big win. “I wasn’t expecting such a big margin, I was wary of the Chilean women. Holland are the opponent now, as a team that stands out, but I think we can beat everyone. If we go out in the quarter-finals, that’s good. It’s not a disaster.”
- Stephanie Vanden Bure He is now the top scorer in the World Cup with 6 goals. “The first goal was important. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Holland won everything, but they weren’t always really convincing. I see opportunities to beat them. As long as we think we can win, anything is possible.”
