Visitors are welcome back to the famous Thai beach Maya Bay from January 1. The beach, made famous thanks to the movie The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio, was closed in 2018 for nature protection.
Since June 2018, tourists are no longer allowed to go to the beach. Then a coral rescue program was launched in the area. At first it was only announced that the beach would be closed for four months, but that eventually became much longer.
Thailand’s Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-Aracha said it was no longer necessary to close the beach to tourists. According to the minister, nature is again in good shape. Visitors are welcome back to the beach from January 1st. However, strict conditions apply.
For example, a maximum of three hundred visitors at one time are allowed on the beach. They can stay for an hour between 10am and 4pm. Before the closure, up to five thousand visitors came to the beach every day. Additionally, boats are no longer allowed into the bay, which means visitors are disembarked on the other side of the island.
Maya Bay became very popular after The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The island of Koh Phi Phi Leh has a beautiful bay surrounded by green covered cliffs 100 meters high. The pearly white beach completes the picture.
