Golden axe, Sega's side-scrolling arcade game from 1989, is getting an animated series on Comedy Central, where South Park also airs. They want to make the series a tribute to medieval fantasy games, with the necessary humor but also a love for the genre.
The Golden Ax series will follow veterans Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they must save Yuria from the evil titan Death Adder for the umpteenth time. They are joined by Hampton Squibb, who has been dreaming of quests all his life and goes on an adventure for the first time, albeit inexperienced and unprepared.
There are 10 episodes planned, with Joe Chandler (writer of American Dad) as showrunner. The cast includes Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Community, Mythical Quest), William McIntyre (Spartacus), Karl Tartt (Star Trek: Lower Decks), and Lisa Gilroy (Glamorous).
Pudi plays Hampton Squib, while Rhys plays Gilius Thunderhead, a battle-hardened dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene. Gilroy is Tyrese Flair, a battle mage who can outsmart everyone. Ax Battler, played by McIntyre, is a barbarian warrior for whom honor and loyalty come first. Finally, Tart plays Chronos “Evil” Lait, the “brave human tiger” from Golden Ax 3.
It is not yet known when the Golden Ax anime series will appear, but it may not be a coincidence that a series is being released now. Sega recently announced that it wants to revive some old classics. This includes Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio, and also Golden Axe. In addition to the series, there will also be a new Golden Ax game, although nothing is known about it yet.
