The photo was taken from the cockpit of a US military reconnaissance aircraft. A day later, the US military shot down a Chinese airship over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina.
The balloon was recovered at the end of last week. “Most of the balloon, including the payload, has been recovered,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said on Wednesday. It declined to provide more details about the analysis of the wreckage. This analysis is in the hands of the FBI of the US Federal Police.
The United States accuses China of using the balloon to spy on military facilities. Beijing maintains that this was a scientific research, and that the balloon derailed by accident.
The incident added to the already troubled relations between the two countries. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s top foreign policy official Wang Yi met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference last weekend.
