King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima concluded their provincial visit to Walcheren in the coastal town of Domburg, including a photo session on the beach. On the beach, some beachgoers spontaneously started singing “Oranje” upstairs.
Before the last stop in Domburg, the royal couple visited the freshwater pond at Serruskirke. It is filled with 20,000 cubic metres of treated waste and rainwater from the nearby campsite. Farmers can use the pond water to irrigate their land in times of drought. It is an innovative solution to Zealand’s freshwater shortage.
The royal couple then encountered a very different atmosphere in Domburg. A cheering crowd, including many children, awaited them at the entrance to the beach. The king and queen took time to greet people behind the crowd barriers. A woman gave Máxima a large shell necklace, which the queen later wore during the photo shoot at sea.

After the royal couple made their way through the crowd back to the beach pavilion, they quietly held a number of conversations inside about the relationship between tourism and the quality of life in the area.
Among other things, the King spoke about residents’ concerns about the impact of tourism and how efforts could be made to improve quality of life while preserving the benefits of tourism. The Queen spoke to another group about beaches and their management.
The regional visit concluded with an informal drink, where everyone who had a role during the regional visit was able to chat with the royal couple.
