The fourth (and possibly last) heat wave of the summer broke out in Spain on Sunday. It is unusually warm both in the northeast and in the south of the country. In neighboring France, the mercury has already risen above 40 degrees and the heat wave will continue until the end of next week.
Temperatures were particularly high in many places in the Iberian Peninsula on Sunday. And the Spanish meteorological service AEMET confirmed that even in the regions of Catalonia and Aragon, in the east and north of the country, the temperature was more than 40 degrees. The temperature in Madrid has become 38 degrees.
The heat is caused by the intense sunlight over the warm air mass. The northeastern region and the basins of the country’s largest rivers are particularly affected.
The heat will continue through Thursday. High temperatures are expected tomorrow or Tuesday.
Tenerife
Meanwhile, Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, is struggling with ferocious wildfires. The fire has spread to an area of about 11,600 hectares since Tuesday evening. About 12,000 people, spread over 11 villages, had to leave their homes. This is fewer than the 26,000 evacuees who were still reported on Saturday. Therefore, this number has been revised downwards.
The fire broke out in the village of Arafa on Tuesday. According to the head of the regional government, Fernando Clavijo, the cause of the fire is not yet clear, and the investigation is still underway.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit Tenerife on Monday. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said Saturday that he hoped the fire would be brought under control in the coming days “if the weather cooperates.”
France heat wave
The heat wave will also continue in neighboring France until the end of the week. There, an orange heat wave alert will be extended to 50 departments Monday — nearly half of the country. The Météo France weather service only predicts lower temperatures Thursday or Friday.
The peak of the heat wave is expected between Tuesday and Wednesday. According to Météo France, “absolute standard temperatures” can be set. For example, the temperature is expected to rise from 40 to 42 degrees in the Rhone Valley on Tuesday.
This new period will be the warmest in the summer of 2023. Rarely has such intense heat occurred in late summer in France.
