Racing Genk is outside the conference league. The Limbergers did what they had to do against Serbian Kokarecki, which was to win 2-0. But due to the draw in Ferencvaros-Fiorentina, Wouter Franken’s European season was over.
Racing Genk started the match against Kokariki knowing that it depended on the result of Ferencvaros-Fiorentina and won by at least two goals. With Al Wahdi replacing the suspended Daniel Muñoz at right-back, Limberger’s side began their quest for the European spring with conviction.
The lightning-fast three-man vanguard Fadera-Sor-Paintsil entered the match immediately. Sur had his first chance in the first minute. The Nigerian, a man in form at Genk, fired a shot wide of the target. Shortly afterwards, one of the Serbs ostentatiously hung up his shirt. Already in red, but referee Trustin Farrugia Cann allowed it to pass.
The good man from Malta did not do that when Vadera was clipped a few minutes later. The penalty kick couldn’t have been clearer and so the ball hit the spot. However, Paintsil revealed the angle he was aiming for in the lead-up: saving Filipovic.
Genk missed their chances in the first quarter. Vadera hit the post after good preparation work from Sur. Paintsil also moved closer to 1-0. Lack of efficiency. once again.
Brian Heynen thought that was enough at the time. The captain scored the powerful match from a distance of approximately 25 metres. Goalkeeper Filipovic misjudged the curve of Heinen’s long shot. 1-0, while the score was still 0-0 in Budapest. All hope.
But disaster was coming. Galarza was tackled by three Cucariki players. When he fell injured to the ground, he retaliated by kicking Sissoko. Oil. The video assistant referee intervened and allowed the Argentine to get the red card. Replays showed that the overwhelming Sissoko escaped very well by receiving a yellow card.
View of Hungary
Genk had to accomplish the task with ten of them. Meanwhile, bad news has arrived at Cejeka Arena that Ferencvaros has taken over. It didn’t look good, but the only thing the Limbergers could do was make sure they won themselves. And it came very close when Al-Khanous put Pintsil alone in front of substitute goalkeeper Bilic. The Ghanaian finished the match expertly: 2-0.
Not long after, Paintsil failed to convert the score to 3-0. However, there were cheers from the stands. Luca Ranieri had covered the distance 1-1 with a distance of 1200 km. This means that one goal from Florentin will be enough for Genk to qualify.
The results remained the same. 2-0 in Genk and 1-1 in Hungary. This brought an end to Wouter Franken’s disappointing European campaign. The coach will once again feel that there is more to it than that. After unnecessary eliminations in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and Europa League against Servette Genève and Olympiacos respectively, Genk finished third in their group in the Conference League. Which leads to elimination.
After KRC were knocked out of the cup last week by KV Ostend, the full focus is now on the competition.
