The budget was somewhat high as parliamentarians from both parties emphasized efforts to increase pressure on Russia and China. For example, the annual defense law contains 265 million euros in evidence for the Ukrainian military and a statement of support for Taiwan’s defense.
The defense budget includes a 2.7 percent pay rise for troops and an increase in the purchase of aircraft and naval vessels.
The plan to impose sanctions on Germany’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline did not materialize despite strong support in Congress.
The defense budget now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to be passed, and then goes to the White House for President Biden’s approval.
