The United States announced on Friday that it was canceling talks with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, following the Islamist movement’s decision earlier this week not to open secondary schools for Afghan girls.
Schools were supposed to reopen on Wednesday for the first time since the Taliban came to power six months ago, but they had to close again a few hours later. However, the Taliban have repeatedly stated that they value her commitment to female education. “We have canceled several meetings scheduled for the Doha Forum in Doha, and we have made it clear that we see this decision as a possible turning point in our commitment,” a US State Department spokesman said.
