The United States reopened four border crossings with Mexico on Thursday as the high volume of illegal immigration decreased and employees were released. This is what a senior American official said.
This concerns border crossings in Texas, Arizona and California. The US Border Patrol closed these crossings in December as it struggled to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants, sometimes numbering nearly 11,000 a day. Last week, the number was just 6,400 illegal immigrants per day, a sharp decline from pre-Christmas levels.
Mexican and US officials pledged last week to work more closely to address record migration at their shared border, after senior US officials traveled to Mexico to meet with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Since then, border controls on the Mexican side have been tightened.
In the US Congress, lawmakers, most of whom are Republicans, continue to push for stricter security measures at the border. They even linked the implementation of such measures to the approval of foreign aid. In other words: no weapons for Ukraine as long as border security is not tightened.
