The US Congress has passed a bill that would greatly restrict imports from China’s Xinjiang region. The purpose of the law is to prevent US companies from using products made by Uyghurs under forced labor.
Earlier this week, the House of Representatives voted in favor of the bill, and now the Senate has done so. The law now goes to President Biden. He has already said he will sign.
Genocide
The United States has long believed that China is committing genocide against the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang. In addition, many export products are said to be the result of forced labor. This includes cotton, gloves and silicone products.
The bill has been under discussion for months. Republicans have accused Democrats of not wanting to introduce stricter rules because they would be an obstacle to President Biden’s sustainability plans. Many of the raw materials for solar panels come from Xinjiang.
Provide evidence
The final bill made no mention of a total import ban. It says US companies that want to import goods from Xinjiang must prove that the goods are not the product of forced labor.
As far as is known, China has not yet responded to the US decision. The country has always denied that any wrongdoing was done in Xinjiang. The policy there, according to China, is to combat terrorism.
