Cyber experts have determined that the app poses “various security risks,” US media cited an internal board memo as saying on Tuesday (local time). According to NBC and CBS, MPs and staff will no longer be allowed to download the app on their service phones or will have to delete the app.
Last week, the US Congress passed a law banning the app on government phones. US states such as Texas, Georgia, Maryland, South Dakota, South Carolina and Nebraska, as well as the US military, have advised their personnel to stop using the app on their service phones, according to CBS.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said in early December that his agency had security concerns about the app. The Chinese government controls the algorithm that serves content to the app’s users. “It gives them the ability to manipulate content and, if they want, use it for influencer campaigns,” Ray said in a lecture at the University of Michigan. Additionally, the Chinese government can access the phones’ software through the app. She can tap user data and use it for espionage purposes.
