The US House of Representatives decided to launch an investigation into the impeachment of President Joe Biden for allegedly profiting from the business dealings of his son Hunter in a brazen manner.
The proposal was adopted by a vote of 221 to 212. The White House rejected the decision, describing it as baseless and politically motivated. President Biden himself also responded in a personal press release, saying: “Instead of doing everything to improve the lives of Americans, Republicans seek to attack me with lies.”
It is unlikely that President Biden will actually be impeached. It is possible that there will be a majority in the House of Representatives to dismiss him, because Republicans have the majority. But in the Senate, Democrats have a majority: 51 seats compared to 49 for Republicans. Furthermore, there must be a two-thirds majority in the Senate to carry out the impeachment.
The impeachment measure could hamper Biden’s election campaign against Donald Trump next year. Republicans can accuse him of corruption.
