There is no new cafe in Tilburg, the youth center is very close

There will be no new café on Verdiplein in Tilburg, Tilburg Municipality will announce this on Tuesday evening. The municipality ignored a nearby youth room at a community center, which turned out to be very close to the intended coffee shop. Mayor Theo Wetterings said: “It is very unfortunate that this is happening. For the businessman involved and for the environment.”

The municipality says it made a mistake: “The ‘distance to youth centers’ criterion was overlooked.” It is about the De Ypelaer Community Centre.

The mayor informed the businessman who will run the café on Tuesday. The mayor also told people from the neighborhood on Tuesday night that the plan would not go ahead.

The youth room opened last year
Muhammad Aknin from the neighborhood. In June, he started a petition against the arrival of the new café in Verdiplein. “We are very happy and relieved that the café will no longer be there,” he said Tuesday night after the mayor informed him of his decision.

Aknin returned to the municipality for a while with the announcement that the youth space would be very close. “The municipality had only looked into the community centre, which wasn’t a problem. This space for young people only opened last year. We checked the policy again, when it turned out that wasn’t allowed.”

I made a mistake
“No circle has been drawn around De Ypelaer Community Centre, as a youth center was recently built,” says Mayor Theo Weterings. “There was a mistake and I apologized to the entrepreneur and the locals for that.”

At the beginning of June, the notary, together with the mayor, drew lots for the two places where the café was allowed. Verdiplein in Tilburg-Noord and Koningsoord, the new center of Berkel-Enschot, finished at the top.

Perkel Inshott continues
The neighborhood in Berkel Inschott also rioted when it became known that there might be a café in the Het Koningsoord shopping centre. Locals started a petition, which has now been signed more than 4,300 times.

Weterings says there is anyway no youth center nearby in Berkel-Enschot and that he will soon enter talks with the village council. As far as he’s concerned, there will be a coffee shop at that place.

On Monday 26 June there will be a discussion with the City Council on how to proceed.
