The long wait for the riders and teams has finally been rewarded. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has published the cyclo-cross calendar for the 2024-2025 season on its website. The dates for the World Cup Finals and Championships have already been announced, but from now on we know what the entire winter will look like.
We’ll have the European season opener on September 15 with a separate Kleebergcross, but in good tradition, most of the real players will probably start their season about a month later on the Beringen mine slag heap. Since then, we’ve had a cross-over in Belgium every weekend until the European Championships in Pontevedra, which surprisingly falls just two days after the perfect classic in Koppenberg. However, Koppenbergcross organizers have agreed with the UEC that both the men’s and women’s elite will be programmed in Spain on Sunday, making combining the two events possible.
It is also striking that the always busy Christmas period remained largely unchanged, despite the “precautionary” status assigned by the UCI to the World Cup rounds in Dublin, Oristano, Holst and Besançon. Compared to last year, only Antwerp (which is now opening the World Cup) and Heusden-Zolder (which is organizing the Belgian Championship in mid-January) are absent from the second half of December.
Global rankings?
Are all questions resolved? no! For example, we don’t know yet which crosses will end up under the Telenet Superprestige, X2O Trophy, or Exact Cross flag. In the Superprestige – just like the World Cup in the hands of Flanders Classics – this is already clear for six rounds. After all, Ruddervoorde, Overijse, Merksplas, Niel, Diegem and Middelkerke are on the calendar again, just like last year. The round falls on the De Schorre field in Boom on the so-called “protected” weekend and cannot be held temporarily, as as mentioned, Heusden-Zolder hosts the Belgian championship.
As for the X2O Cup and Exact Cross, that remains to be seen. The legendary Koppenberg will certainly be the inaugural X2O Cup. The regulating agency Golazo is responsible for all crossbreeding in both classifications and still has to report crossbreeding that ends in either classification. We will have to wait a little longer until two municipalities have to bring this issue to their councils in the coming days, as Christophe Impens (Golazo) told us. The final puzzle pieces are then placed.
