This way the action button gets multiple tasks

Apple gives you a number of standard options with the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), but you can bind many more tasks to the button! This is how it works.

New action button on iPhone 15 Pro (maximum)

Apple has said goodbye to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max for the first time silent-Knob. On new iPhones, this key will be replaced by a new action button. We’ve previously seen a similar button on the Apple Watch Ultra and now it’s coming to the iPhone for the first time. With the new iPhone, you can decide for yourself what action will be performed when you press the button.

However, when you assign the action button to your iPhone 15 Pro (Max), you are limited to the options that Apple provides you. By default, you can choose from nine button calling tasks, such as opening the camera or turning the flashlight on and off. So it looks like you’re limited to the functions Apple gives you, but you can do more with tasks with the new action button!

Add more tasks to the action button

One of the nine options Apple gives you is to associate the Assignments app with an action button. In this application, you can add tasks (also called shortcuts) that Apple itself does not provide. With the Tasks app, there are many options when setting the action button. This application is standard on your iPhone. Don’t have the app? Then it can be downloaded from here:

Have you installed the Shortcuts app on your iPhone? Then binding tasks to the action button works as follows on iPhone 15 Pro (maximum):

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone;
  2. Press the Action Button;
  3. Swipe right until you see “Task”;
  4. Click on “Choose a task…”;
  5. Select the task you want to associate with the action button.

With iPhone 15 Pro (Max), you can now use Tasks to set what happens when you press the action button. You can also choose from a certain number of actions here, which have been pre-determined by Apple. This makes it possible to open an app of your choice when you press the action button, start a timer or Shazam. The task you choose here of course depends on your personal preferences.

More options via the Assignments app

Apple gives you a number of options by default in the Shortcuts app, but the big advantage of the app is that you can add more shortcuts yourself. They are developed by other iPhone users and can often be found on the Internet. The iPhone 15 Pro (Max)’s action button has just debuted, but it probably won’t be long before the first useful shortcuts are shared online.

Until then, you’ll have to make do with the tasks Apple has already set for you. It’s recommended that you associate a function with the action button, which you often do on your iPhone 15 Pro (Max). This often saves you some work, because you only have to press the new button once. For example, you can use the action button to open your favorite app with the touch of a button or instantly recognize a nice song with Shazam.
