After the European Championship in 2021, he retired as an international player, but for the European Championship in 2024, Toni Kroos (34 years old) will return to the German national team. The Real Madrid midfielder wants to lead the host country to success. “There's a lot more to it than people currently think.”
Rumors about Toni Kroos' potential return as an international player have been going full speed for weeks. Especially after national team coach Julian Nagelsmann described Kroos' return as an “interesting idea” last December.
The Real Madrid midfielder has now put an end to the speculation on Instagram. “Brief and concisely: I will be playing for Germany again from March,” he wrote.
“Why did I make this choice? Because the national team coach asked me, I am looking forward to it and I am sure that with Mannschaft in the European Championship there will be a lot more than most people think now.”
After 106 international matches, Kroos bid farewell to the national team in 2021, after exiting in the quarter-finals of the European Championship against England. Now he wants to celebrate his return as an international player in friendly matches in March against France and the Netherlands.
On June 14, the Germans will open their European Championship campaign against Scotland, followed by group matches against Hungary and Switzerland.
The 2014 world champion remains a mainstay in Real Madrid's midfield. He is the only German player to have won the Champions League five times, four times with Die Koninkeljke and once with Bayern Munich.
