Now we know the candidates. Songs, that’s later. Peter van de Veer explains: “We thought it was very important for the candidates to share their song. That they contributed to it or at least thought about it.” “All seven of them have clear inputs, which is important to be able to stand on that stage. It’s not that we associate a song by someone else with an artist.”
Anyway, the nominees will compete against each other at the Eurosong Show on January 14th. According to host Van de Veer, there is “a great deal of diversity among the candidates if you look at the backgrounds of these people”. “Diversity is also very important in the Song Contest itself. It was great to see that we received such a huge response to the fact that we are performing Eurosong again. We didn’t really have to put in any effort to achieve that diversity. The records went in all directions and in all respects.”
We don’t see any really big names among the candidates. “But you don’t need that for the Eurovision Song Contest,” says Peter van de Veer. “If the artist believes in it, the song is great and the acting is there, then you don’t need anything else.” One of the big names, as mentioned earlier, is Tom Dyce. “He’s really looking forward to it,” says Van de Veer. “Tom actually talked to me about the Zomerhit they were writing.
“Tom and Cato, the starlings, set high standards for themselves and people might expect a lot from them. As a plus. It’s going to be a very exciting match anyway.”
