More than three months after opening, Tesla boss Elon Musk has to temporarily close his huge factory near Berlin. Because production is very slow, work procedures will be revised in the next two weeks. That reports “Bild”.
Too slow, too low quality, too few staff: these are the problems he has Brand new Tesla factory in Grunheide. It’s a car factory downer.
Tesla aims to produce 500,000 Model Ys at this plant each year, but so far only 1,000 bodies are being made per week — about a tenth of its original goal. In addition, many cars still had to be modified before delivery due to defects.
Next Monday, work will be off for two weeks, Bild says. It is unclear how many of the 4,500 employees will be sent on leave and how many technicians will be left to adjust production operations.
Three shifts
After the production break, there will be three shifts instead of two, according to the staff. In addition, Tesla could then begin production in an adjacent hall.
Finding good employees isn’t easy for Tesla either. A car manufacturer hires 400 to 500 people per month. But this is still very little. By the end of the year, the workforce should grow from about 4,500 to 9,000 jobs. So batteries are produced in Grünheide.
China
To date, the motors are supplied from China. The factory in Shanghai was closed in the spring due to Corona. The result: Tesla sold 17 percent less Model 3 and Ys in the second quarter than planned.
This was the first drop in two years. Tesla confirmed that production rebounded during the quarter. For example, a record number of cars were produced in June.
disappointment
However, the quarterly drop in the number of cars delivered is a disappointment for the company, which has recorded strong growth, helped by the opening of factories in Germany and the US state of Texas. The drop in the number of births was also greater than what ordinary experts had expected.
Tesla warned in April that delivery problems, which affect the auto industry as a whole, would continue to hamper the company’s production through the end of the year. Deliveries of a record number of cars continued in the first quarter of the year.
