David Goffin is the only Belgian man in the main draw in Paris. He has already played twice against his Round 1 opponent: Hubert Hurkacz.
They also met last year on the Roland Garros clay court. Pole then won the third round 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. Then he was eliminated from the final against Norwegian Casper Rudd. Also in 2022, Goffin won on clay in Rome 7-6 (10/8) and 7-6 (7/2) against Hurkacz.
The winner plays in the second round against Dutchman Talon Grips (ATP 39) or one of the qualifiers.
Moreover, the Spanish top seed Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 1) opens to a player from the qualifiers. He could bump into Serbian Novak Djokovic (ATP 3) in the semi-finals, who is chasing his 23rd Grand Slam title.
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev (ATP 2) is in the other half of the table. Fourteen-time (ATP 15) winner Rafael Nadal has eliminated injury and is not there in Paris for the first time since his 2005 debut.
Elise Mertens, seeded No. 28, starts the tournament against a qualifier and will meet American Katie McNally (WTA 54) or Romanian Ana Bogdan (WTA 60) if she wins. Limburger reached the fourth round last year, just as it did in 2018.
Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA 81) meets Russia’s Anna Blinkova (WTA 66), whom she has already lost twice in three matches. Next, France’s Caroline Garcia (WTA 5) may be waiting.
Marina Zanievska (WTA 88) will take to the track for the first time against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva (WTA 61) and can look forward to a duel with China’s Chenwen Cheng (WTA 19).
Greet Minnen (WTA 119) was unable to qualify for the Roland Garros main draw. In the third and final qualifying round, Ukrainian Dagana Jastremska (WTA 144) proved to be very strong.
