Tadej Pogacar knows which seven-man team he will support during the Tour de France. The UAE team has unveiled its strong eight-man squad, with no surprises.
After the Tour of Switzerland, it was already clear that Pogacar would have at least two superhuman assistants: Adam Yates (winner) and Joao Almeida (second) led the opposition to a heap. The third superman, Juan Ayuso, had to leave Dauphiné after a fall, but he regained his fitness. Marc Soler and Pavel Sivakov also performed well in the French Tour.
Niels Bullet was selected as the plains specialist, guide on stages with fewer altitude meters, and as the team’s first spotter. Tim Wellens can of course also be played in that area, although the Limburger who emigrated to Monaco can also cross the mountain. He already showed his superior form at the Belgian Time Trial Championships on Thursday.
“Good group”
“It’s already my fifth tour and I’m very excited,” Pogacar says in the press release. We have worked hard all year to prepare as a team. It’s also nice to start in Italy. I recently made good memories there at the Giro. After that the preparation was perfect. I had a bit of a rest after the Giro and in the last weeks the focus has been entirely on the Tour.
“We were able to spend a lot of time together as a group during our altitude training camp (in Isola 2000, ed.).” We trained well and spent many hours on the bike. “We are a good group and I can’t wait to fight for the win and put on a great show for the fans.”
