Game review“Graafflation” was recently declared the word of the year for 2023. However, our money was on “multiverse,” because if there’s one thing that’s been hot and unfortunately exploited in popular culture over the past year, it’s been the concept of parallel universes. But as Jimmy Fry declared half a century ago: There’s always room for one more!
And look, his words came true because it’s also set in the roguelike action platformer “Trinity Fusion.” This multiverse consists of the so-called Underworld, Upper World, and Superworld with the Prime World at the center. Due to necessary plot disasters, the various universes are about to collapse, and of course there is only one person who can prevent this.
In “Trinity Fusion” this role is assigned to the main character Maya, but the unique feature is that you do not work directly with her. After all, Maya is telepathically linked to her three multiversal counterparts Nera, Kira, and Altara, each of whom is located in one of the other three worlds.
the way of playing
In terms of gameplay, this setup translates into three different game environments that you can choose from at the start of each round. Run away, because as we mentioned, this is a roguelike. Upon first playback, you’ll immediately notice a comparison to the excellent ‘Dead Cells’, a title that ‘Trinity Fusion’ has a lot in common with. A 2D platformer that takes you through procedurally generated levels where the goal is to advance a little bit each time, unlocking more upgrades and collecting some extra loot so you can start your next endeavor stronger.
to merge
Each of the three heroines has a unique playstyle, but as the title suggests, the idea is to blend in. At certain points in the levels, you can merge your current character with one of the other two ladies, so you instantly gain all of the two’s unique characteristics. A great twist on a trusted formula.
Another welcome addition to the traditional roguelike structure is Hyper Mode. This genre isn’t exactly known for its accessibility to newcomers, so in Hyper Mode you get a solid, permanent boost to your health and damage with each game over.
Negative point
The only downside to “Trinity Fusion” is the old pain that every roguelike has: after a while you see it and everything starts to get a little repetitive. Even with three different universes to play in, after a few hours, everything starts to look a lot alike. Fortunately, you can complete the round in about half an hour, so you won’t be stuck in the game for too long at a time.
Resolution: 7/10
“Trinity Fusion” is a fun little title that will please fans of roguelikes, especially “Dead Cells.” Don’t expect a strong graphic tour de force or a very in-depth story, but expect fast-paced action with tight controls and some original innovations in an established genre that makes it highly recommended for both enthusiasts and newcomers. You predicted it well, Jimmy!
