Trump on his arrest: ‘I never thought something like this could happen in the United States’

“I never thought something like this could happen in the United States.” This was Donald Trump’s reaction to his conviction in court just hours earlier in New York on Tuesday night (local time).

After being questioned in New York, the former president and current presidential candidate immediately returned to his hometown of Mar-a-Lago, where he addressed the press and his supporters. Large campaign banners on the platform and on the podium adorned his “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.

“The only crime I’m guilty of is defending the country against those who want to destroy it,” Trump said. He called the accusations “electoral interference”. He reiterated that attorney Alvin Bragg is a “far-left, George Soros-backed prosecutor” and called Justice Juan Merchan a “Trump-hating judge.”

Not many words were wasted on his arrest. He used the rest of his speech to express his displeasure with the Democrats and everything he believes they are doing wrong. “Our country is going to hell,” he said. He also counted all the investigations against him, especially what was in his eyes.

National stations such as ABC News and NBC News stopped broadcasting the speech live in less than ten minutes. CNN lasted a little longer. And the only national channel that aired the speech in its entirety was Fox News, a medium often seen as the former president’s mouthpiece. “We thought he was going to talk about his arrest, but he’s mostly airing his grievances,” ABC said..

Among those present at Mar-a-Lago were Trump’s son Donald Jr. and Republican House members Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz.
