Armed thieves attempted to steal diamonds from the famous Tefaf art gallery in Maastricht. The exchange was immediately evacuated and the police arrested two suspected Belgians. Two others are still on the run.
Pictures from the European Gallery of Fine Arts (Tefaf) show how four masked men attempt to smash a display cabinet with a sledgehammer on Tuesday morning. The thieves are said to have targeted the diamonds offered by the London jeweler Symbolic & Chase.
Local police announced on Twitter that several roads and the Koning Willem Alexanderton Tunnel near Maastricht were closed. Meanwhile, two of the four suspects were arrested. The local newspaper reported that two Belgian men aged 22 and 26 Limburger†
The organization of the art exhibition confirms that an accident occurred around 11:30 am during which the public was evacuated. The gallery’s security team responded quickly to disarm the culprit and the Dutch police were on the scene within minutes. No one was injured in the accident.” The stock market has since reopened.
