All over the world only two or three glaciers are needed. So says holiday psychologist and climate expert Jens de Graaf. According to him, the effect of a sharp decrease in the number of glaciers is greatly exaggerated. There are still thousands of people.
The modern vacationer desires more scenery, warmth, or movement. De Graaf has done research showing that vacationers would rather go to a Beyoncé concert, watch a soccer match, or even visit a cabaret show by Martijn Koning than watch snow and ice slowly slide across a glacier.
According to De Graaf, there are exceptions, but only a few glaciers are needed worldwide. “It’s enough about three glaciers for people who want to get off the plane after an expensive and polluting expedition and then be able to report that it’s too bad the giant iceberg gets a lot smaller,” said the climate expert.
De Graaf advocates alternative ways to admire glaciers: “Of course there are real enthusiasts who would like to see as many glaciers as possible. Fortunately, enough pictures of melting glaciers have been taken in recent years. These may also be shown on a photo or on YouTube.” “Want to see the glaciers grow back? Then you play the video backwards. Technology doesn’t make much sense these days.”
