belgian footballIt wasn’t champagne football at Stein, but Union was able to get back on track with a win after losing to Ohio Leuven. Deniz Undav was the big man for the people of Brussels who visited STVV with his 15th and 16th goal of the season. Al-Ittihad (doubles) lost seven points.
Stein was not even half full before the Proud Leader of the Federation arrived. Judging by the first half hour, you can hardly blame those who stayed home for such a cold Friday evening. There was one big chance of a note. Christian Bruhls managed to kick the falling ball unimpeded, but Morris knocked it out from his bottom corner. Despite possession of the ball, Union could not save it. The illustrious royal couple Undav-Vanzeir were invisible. Until the 32nd minute. Vanzer went deep, low cross, and nostrils with a subtle flick after STVV goalkeeper Schmidt. Union ahead. One chance, and it is pending. This is also class. That was what the match needed, the fireworks running rather than off the field. Burgess still had a high chance of making it 0-2, but with a superb display on the goal line, Schmidt kept his head off the field.
Undav left the double lead with the goalkeeper after 58 minutes. Half a minute later he scored his second goal – a great sign for Schmidt – but this time it was reported for offside. So not 0-2, but 1-1. Brüls fantastically corrected his move last week after an hour. With a hard blow he took over the training of goalkeeper Maurice, although the latter did not look very good with that mop ball. STVV came up with more after that goal, but once again it was Undav who rocked his head against the ropes with a corner kick (!) this season. Barely a minute later, Vanzer missed an open chance for 1-3. STVV lacks the creativity to create danger, and remains 1-2. A victory gives Union some breathing space at the top. The Brussels residents are once again (even) ahead by seven points over the pursuers of Club Brugge and Antwerp.
