The United Kingdom and the United States have announced new economic sanctions against Russia. The US will impose sanctions on 500 companies, organizations and individuals. The UK does this for the over fifty.
The new British sanctions target companies in Russia's arms industry, including Sverdlov, the largest state-run munitions manufacturer.
Actions are also being taken against companies in the metal, diamond and energy industries. The sanctions also apply to several foreign companies, including a Turkish organization that, according to the British, supplies electronics to Russia. Three Chinese electronics companies are also on the list.
This list includes many important Russian importers and manufacturers of equipment used for defense systems and parts for missiles and tank engines. The British say they are preparing to attack the Russian navy in an attempt to circumvent Russia's oil embargo.
American sanctions
The U.S. sanctions are the largest since the outbreak of war on February 24, 2022, nearly two years ago. These actions are mainly aimed at attacking Russia's military industry. U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Adeyemo says companies in other countries are also on the list to help Russia with equipment.
The White House has promised to come up with a package in response to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He died last week in a prison camp. The White House said Russian President Putin was responsible for his death.
This week, the European Union also announced it would bring a new package against 200 individuals and entities linked to the Russian regime.
