US imposes sanctions on Iran for supplying drones to Russia | Abroad

The United States has imposed new sanctions against seven senior officials in Iran’s drone and missile industry. After all, Russia is using Iranian-made drones in attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a press release that the seven were in senior positions at Iranian drone maker Qods Aviation Industries (QAI) and the Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), the main body overseeing Iran’s ballistic missile program. project.

According to Blinken, the move targets individuals and companies involved in the production and transfer of Iranian Shahed and Mohajer drones, “which Moscow continues to use in its brutal attacks on Ukraine and its critical infrastructure.” The minister argues that Iranian military support for Russia not only fuels the conflict in Ukraine, but also violates UN resolutions.

“Greatest Supporter”

“Iran is now Russia’s biggest military backer,” Blinken said. He also argues that Iran should stop supporting a Russian war of aggression.

The U.S. Treasury Department explains that the sanctions will freeze the assets of seven people in the United States. Additionally, Americans are no longer allowed to trade with them. Six of them are directors and board members of QAI. The company was already sanctioned by the US in 2013. The sanctions also target the director of the AIO.

The US has already imposed sanctions on companies and individuals accused of involvement in Iranian drones used by Russia in Ukraine. Iran last year acknowledged supplying drones to Russia, but said it was a small number and was delivered before the Russian invasion began on February 24.
